(IMAGE: FACT grantee Interfaith Worker Justice calling for justice in the workplace)In addition to helping to ensure its granteesÕ long-term sustainability by funding their general operating needs and capacity-building efforts, FACT has initiated a number of studies and other projects to help its board, grantees, and the grantmaking sector as a whole better understand the factors and Òbest practicesÓ that can increase the effectiveness and longevity of progressive organizations.

These efforts include:
  • grant making in the new media arena approved by the Board as a unique family project;

  • two webinars in December 2008 led by a team of consultants from FACT's Management Assistance Program on the impact of the economic crisis on non-profit budgets. You can download a presentation of the webinar: Assessing financial health presentation;

  • work to encourage greater electoral activism and voter engagement among its grantees and within the progressive sector as a whole;

  • a Community Organizing Evaluation Project to help organizations evaluate their activities and impact;

  • a study on groupsÕ ability to diversify and stabilize their funding through earned income from sales of mission-related goods and services; and

  • a report on a variety of ways foundations have adopted policies of higher or flexible payout without necessarily intending to spend down: Beyond five percent
